Germany
Berlin
Until November 1989, Berlin was stuck in the middle of the iron curtain, then the Berlin Wall came down and the city changed forever. Nowadays Berlin is a vibrant cosmopolitan city that is home to wild parties such as the Love Parade and exhibits a wilder and more exhuberant ambience than many other, more staid, German cities.

Cologne
Cologne (Köln) is one of the most attractive cities in Germany and its location on the Rhine just a few hours from the Dutch, Belgian and French borders means that this city is many peoples' introduction to Germany. The city has a wealth of interesting sights including a bunch of museums, some Roman ruins and the spectacular cathedral. Cologne's convenient location makes day trips to both Bonn and Dusseldorf a possibility.

Frankfurt
There's not much to see in Frankfurt, however it is a major business centre and one of Europe's most American cities. Because of Frankfurt's central location, there is a good chance that you'll pass through here as many travellers arrive at its busy airport.

Hamburg
Although it is more than 100km inland, Hamburg is Germany's largest port. This major northern German city which rose to prominence as a trading centre has become one of Germany's richest cities. Nowadays, however, it is known mostly for its bustling port and red-light district.
However there is much more to Hamburg which many visitors discover to be a surprisingly pleasant city with many parks and outdoor areas. Alsterparks, Municipal Parks, Hirschpark... there are 25 more parks in Hamburg, as well as 900 kilometres of rambling paths. Almost every street has trees and bushes - avenues, coppices and parks are as much a feature of Hamburg's cityscape as arms of the river and bridges.
Hamburg is Germany's only major city with a glittering lake at its centre. One can walk round the Outer Alster or follow the Alster rambling path from Fuhlsbüttel Dam to the North. Sailing and surfing in the city centre - in which other city is that still possible? There is aslo the possibility of greeting the overseas ships along the River Elbe. With its tiny front gardens and the museum harbour, the old pilots and skippers district of Oevelgönne is a little picturesque world of its own.

Munich
The largest city in southern Germany is famous for one thing - beer. The Czechs and Belgians probably make better beer, but no one celebrates it like the Munchners who hold numerous beer festivals, including the famous Oktoberfest.
