Milan

Milan is overlooked by most visitors to Italy. Although this big northern Italian city may not bask in the historic splendor reminiscent of Rome, Florence or Venice, there is still plenty to see and do including the world's third largest church - the Duomo - as well as the Santa Maria delle Grazie church which is home to Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper.

Rome

All roads lead to the eternal city, capital of the Roman Empire and the site of the Vatican City. Despite all its history, Rome is a city which lives for today with plenty of great caffès, bars and restaurants, lots of mopeds and its fair share of ancient ruins. There is an endless array of things to see including the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, the catacombs, the ancient Roman Forum, the Colosseum and the Pantheon.

Sienna

With its ramparts still standing, Sienna is Italy's best preserved medieval town, which at one stage was a serious rival to Florence. Sienna is close enough to be done in a day trip from Florence, however you may want to stay here in order to really explore the city. If possible, try and visit Sienna on 2 July or 16 August when the city is home to the unique Palio horse race and festival.

Venice

There's no other place like it. Venice's relationship with water has played an important part in the city's history. In its heyday, the Venetian Republic spanned the Adriatic including places such as Dubrovnik, Butrint and Corfu. Nowadays Venice is one of Europe's most beautiful cities with a wealth of attractions including the Doge's Palace and Piazza San Marco. Venice's attractions aren't limited to the tourist trodden centre, as 96% of the city's buildings are listed as historic monuments.
